Petit Taxi in Casablanca out of control

9 Apr

Casablanca Petit TaxiTaxi! Next Time you call for “petit Taxi” in Casablanca, don’t be surprised to be told where to GO! Petit Taxi or Small Cabs (red cars) in Casablanca continue to pick and chose who they want to serve. The private network of these cabs or so called Petit Taxi (stands for small cab in french) provide a vital role for residents and tourists, this is the preferred method to travel within Casablanca if you don’t have the time or the energy to muscle your way into a public bus.

The way this work is the same as in any other town in the world, you wave them in, you tell them the destination and voila! They supposed to take you to your destination, you pay the rate on the visible meter inside the cab! But not so fast! The Can drivers in Casablanca are now discriminating and refuse to do what they are supposed to do but:

  • They refuse to serve groups of two or more, they rather pick singles to maximize revenue.
  • They charge for luggage and carry on, this is against the law.
  • They refuse to take to “your destination” they tell you where “they are going”
  • They refuse to serve over weight people.

Eye witness from casablanca report that the situation is getting out of control, these cab drivers know they are violating the law but the public is too busy and under educated to push for reform. ” I waited for hours on the side of the road, I waived multiple Taxi’s and nobody wants to take me to my destination. I was willing to pay them my cab fair but they look me in the eye and say, I am not going there!” States Mrs Lahmoune from Sidi Moumen. One otion they have is to involve the local police but that is not a guaranteed resolution. Local Moroccan Police are not known to be fair to the public and easily influenced by briberry.

We hope that exposing this new phenomenon to the public and local authorities that it will lead to fast resolution. The industry is governed by local Policecasablanca taxi and transportation industry, the situation is clearly driven by greed and public ignorance of the law. His majesty Mohammed VI is making great stride in turning Morocco into a democracy but thugs like these cab drivers are sucking the life out of hard working people.

Please help the Casablanca residents fix this vital transportation issue by simply enforcing the law and calling on the Ministry to look into the issue.

Progress Made

24 Feb

Eye Witness reported that the Local Moroccan authorities have cleaned up the area, this was encouraging news and well over due!

I personally wrote letters to every Moroccan Government office pleading for help and I think that someone got the call and decided to do their job! French media has contacted our group for comments as they planned to broadcast live images from Al Ghofran cemetery.

At this time, we want to thank everyone who made this project come to a great end, we will continue to post updates on Moroccan Cemeteries in hope on an overhaul. We are grateful for all the help we have received. However, our friends at Wafin turned a deaf ear to our cry for help and never answered any of our email, we were very disapointed in them and their lack of support. Wafin Group organizers should be ashamed! French Newspapers were more helpful than our own people! But if it was a nite party event or some single man looking for single woman the ad would be posted!

Without losing focus on the matter at hand, thank you to our Moroccan authorities for stepping up to the plate and fixing the issue.

Morocco Al Ghofran Needs your help

10 Aug

Casablanca Cemetery Needs your help

I cannot stand before you today and claim that I am an expert on cemetery maintenance; I have identified some issues that are obvious to the public and the list is not all inclusive. Feel free to ad and participate in this forum and keep in mind that we have zero interest in finger pointing or blaming anyone. We are simply focused on the correcting the situation.

Top Issues:

Cleanliness:

“Annadafato Mina Al Imane” Not necessarily true here. The minute you set foot on the cemetery ground, you will notice the lack of trash barrels and collection bins. This is causing all debris and visitor’s trash to be tossed on the ground from plastic bags, glass containers to news papers.

Animal droppings and feces cannot be left unnoticed. Donkeys, cats and dogs patrol the entire cemetery and they make their presence felt.

Landscaping:

The lack of landscaping maintenance make this cemetery a soar eye, the overgrown brushes, lack of grass and green plants make this cemetery look abandoned and not very attractive. I heard that visitors refused to walk to their loved one’s graves due to overgrown brushes and for their concerns about their safety.

Animal / Pest Control:

During my last visit, I heard that Foxes are digging large holes on the side of graves that they use for nesting. I also heard from ground keeper about close encounters with scorpions. Visitors are concerned about their safety and now avoid visiting the cemetery to pay respect for their loved one.

Begging & panhandling:

The minute you set foot on the ground of AL Ghofran cemetery, you will be greeted by a large number of panhandlers that come in multiple forms and I am not poking fun at them here; I am simply stating the facts ( Allah Yaafou alihoum):

  • Handicaps
  • Homeless Kids
  • Mothers with young kids
  • Old seniors
  • Water Boys
  • Etc..
